We made a super-extra big covered yard for ours (using a big 150x50ft netting we purchased from Mcmurry)and we let the ladies out for long periods of time, even a couple days at a time, but never in any pattern that a predator can predict. At our new place it won't be quite so simple. I think we might use several tractors and part-time free ranging. Too bad!

Hawks gotta eat, too. Still, I'm sorry for the loss of the babies. I grew up on a farm and we had free range chickens. We also had several foxes in the area that used come poking around looking for meal. Sometimes they got a chick, sometimes we'd scare them off with a rifle shot. Such is life.
